PERSON: Basquiat

My kids and I recently visited King Pleasure, the Jen-Michel Basquiat exhibition in downtown Los Angeles, and it was so great to see! The exhibition is organized by Basquiat’s sisters and is a glimpse into his life and process through his paintings as well as objects from his life. Divided into 4 galleries - each from a different era in Basquiat’s life - the spaces include paintings in environments that give a glimpse into his life during that time.

If you get a chance, visit the exhibition! There’s so much to take in and it’s a narrative experience of Basquiat’s work that the entire family can enjoy. Also, if you happen to have the time, P.S. ARTS is offering a free Family Art Night with free admission to the event on the first Thursday of the month. Tickets are free every Thursday from 5-6pm on a first-come-first-served basis.

In the meantime, check out this book of Maya Angelou’s poem, Life Doesn’t Frighten Me, illustrated with Basquiat’s drawings.
