ANIMAL: June Bug

The name "June bug" refers to any of the 100 species of beetles that are related to the scarab family from ancient Egyptian iconography. How cool!

One day (in June) a June bug flew onto my shoulder. I picked it off and held it on my finger. I was surprised to hear a strange hissing sound when trying to move it. I guess it didn’t want to move! They make this sound by pushing their wings down, forcing the air out between their wings and back.

Fun facts: They are nocturnal! They are clumsy! June Bugs larvae can live in the ground for 2-3 years before surfacing to become an adult!

Do you like beetles and bugs? We sure do!
